I have been visiting and vacationing in Michigan ( particularly the thumb area) my entire life. As an adult I have passed my love of Michigan's thumb area on to my children. The summer just would not be complete without a trip to Harbor Beach! I truly believe more people should vacation in Michigan rather than spend thier vacations in other areas, especially this summer with the oil spill in the Gulf. Michigan has so much to offer, and spending our money in our own state would help out our troubled economy. Michigan has a beautiful coastline full of wildlife. Whether you want to lay on the shore and just take in nature or go full throttle and hike, boat, fish, swim, you can do it all. Michigan has 124 Lighthouses dotting the coastline.
Michigan's thumb area is outlined by the Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron, there are plenty of year round activities and lodging. Me and my family have vacationed at many places including, The Train Station Motel, Wagner Parks rustic cabins, and just recently Lake Huron Campground, we had a blast!!!
The thumb area has plenty of hometown festivals and events. There truly is something to do for everyone, without the high cost of an expensive vacation, just a tank of gas and a short trip up I-94 and then onto the beautiful coastline. I think michiganders should support there home state and spend more time vacationing in their own state, this would greatly help our economy. Restaurants, campgrounds, bed and breakfast facilities and mom and pop stores all need our support! So, if you live in Michigan and want to have a great vacation, then you really should take a STAYCATION, don't give your hard earned money to another state, spend it right here at home.

Great post Tracey! I have been traveling to Michigan's thumb area my entire life also. My Dad lives in Lexington about 20 minutes N of Port Huron. Seems like everyone has been to Lexington or knows someone that has been there. I agree there isn't a better way to spend a stay-cation than traveling in MI's thumb area.
ReplyDeleteTracey, I love this site. I would just like to say I was never a fan of Michigan. I cried my eyes out when my military husband told me we had gotten transferred to the Detroit area. We first moved to Selfridge ANG base, and I still did not have that warm fuzzy I want to stay feeling. Long story short, it was not until I started camping up north as we love to say that I fell in love with Michigan. I now camp yearly at a very small camp ground on Lake Charlevoix. So close to the lake I can almost dip my toes in the water as I crawl out of my tent. The sunrises are as beautiful as the sunsets. The smells of fresh air and the quietness of the evening are what I love most about upper Michigan. As for spending money, I love the camping so much in that area I pay for a week ahead just so I can get the perfect spot. While I camp with the girl my husband camps with the guys on the Michigan lake side of the state at Fishermans Island. Whatever you choose there are always things to do, things to see. Wonderful Michigan made products and great Michigan grown cherries! The only thing I can see that you might add are some photos of locally made items. Thank you for sharing
ReplyDeleteI agree that people need to stay here in Michigan to vacation. Putting money into our economy is a necessity right now, because that means we are putting our residents to work. I live in the Romeo area and we always go to the farmers down the road to buy our fruits and vegetables. You should have mentioned that not only is this good for our economy, but also our health. The fruits and vegetables that we get from the local stands are mostly organic, which you pay extra for at the retail stores. Also, another thing in michigan is the theme park across the state, Michigan's Adventure, that is a theme park and water park all in one, for one price, unlike Cedar Point, in which a combo ticket is very expensive. Michigan's Adventure is just aobut as far as Cedar Point, and unless you really want the extreme roller coasters, Michigan's Adventure is awesome. My kids are still a little young, so the average roller coasters and water slides are perfect for them. Skip Cedar Point and go to Michigan's Adventure. It is cheaper, less crowded, and best of all we are spending money here in Michigan, rather than Ohio.
ReplyDeleteHey Tracey! I completely agree with you and I think you have a great argument present. Just last winter I actually took a "staycation" up to Boyne Mountain and went to the indoor water park they have there. It was beautiful! I definitely was very glad that I didn't have to spend a ton of money to have such a great time. I've never been to stay on any of the lake fronts even though I've lived here my entire life and I think especially after reading this post I'm going to have to check out some more places to stay! I think you'd be a great advocate for the "Pure Michigan" ads writing stuff like this. It really is a pretty cool state. We get alot of crap we don't deserve! haha great post and I agree with you 100 percent!
ReplyDeleteVery nice blog Tracy I enjoyed all three segments. I particularilly enjoyed the part about Staycation. My wife and I are on a limited income, and when we get a few bux together we love to take a Staycation up by the thumb. We really like Port Austin area. Nice sandy beaches, no gravel like the eastern shore has, quiet casual folks just enjoying Gods wonderful creation together. Though I must admit, when we get enough money together we are going a little more north, to the greatness that is the Upper Penninsula. Just can not beat the shores of Lake Superior.
